Life Can Be So Surreal!
Yet only a few people seem to notice. Most are so often distracted by mundane concerns and hypnotized by the mass media, that they mostly fail to see just how surreal it can be. We are wrongly taught that the best way to find surrealism in life is by paying for some kind of show, when in fact, the surreal is waiting for us wherever we are.
We artists, however, are generally more aware of the stranger side of life; observation is integral to our profession. We can help…

The Blind Woman Who Helped Me to See
On a recent visit to my hometown, NYC, I attended the usual figure drawing sessions at the Art Students' League. After class, evening time, I rested for a while on a bench in the lobby. Soon after, a blind woman - Asian, with orange-dyed hair, walked in, poked around with her walking cane, then sat down on the bench diagonally across from me. The first thing I thought was why would she dye her hair if she couldn't see it? Maybe she once could see and knows what orange looks like?…

The creatures of this planet can teach us about art and life...
They exist in the here and now, fully present and responsive to the life and beauty in them and around them. We humans have many special abilities that they don't have, but we often misuse them due to our capacity for imagination which can both help and/or lead to a destructive sort of irrationality. …

Setting Priorities in a Money and Tech-Obsessed World
We have to be careful not to miss out on, neglect, ignore, sacrifice the precious aspects of life due to the increasing demands for a focus on technicalities, economics, and minutia. We have to remember our original soul intent, what drove us to achieve in the first place. If one loses sight of this in favor of technical perfection, what is the point? It all reminds me of the famous Native American quote:
"Only when the last tree has died and the last ... last fish been caught will…

In art, one can break the rules - What a relief!
In this rule-driven world, isn't it great that in art, one can break the rules? Why? Because breaking rules is the very essence of creativity, and without it there is no creativity. In this light, ANYONE can be an "artist" in their own way, expressing themselves uniquely through a creative medium even under the most tyrannical conditions. A tyrannical leader may set limits on life and its counterpart - art, but there is always that individualistic touch here or there that survives through…
