"Cool title as well. So frustrating when you see a great piece named 'Number 1' etc like Jackson Pollock - a good piece needs an original name... (what does Reubenesque mean?)"

"Fantastic piece - can you get a better picture of it? (My friend has a 12megapixel camera that cost 60 pounds - you could probably get a used one for about 40 dollars - they also save on money spent paying for scans at print shops). Love this piece"

Hi - Just looked at your poetry site and you are a really great poet! Seems like b-uncut has quite a few Renaissance men and women...good at art and other things too

Prague is a lovely European city - not too big or small. When you go, find J. Lennon's Wall and bring a camera, you'll have a hey day taking pics of it. About your self portraits - I don't know if it's the colour, lighting or what, but they somehow remind me of Rembrandt's self portraits. I like the lack of 'realistic' representation. They're not about what you look like (this always changes anyway), they're about who you are (and this always changes too). They bring into question what a self portrait is supposed to do. Imagine making one a day for a whole year - something like a pictorial diary. Something to ponder... thanx for your comments btw...

btw - I checked out your work - your self portraits are pretty intense. It's like you make portraits of yourself inside out - v. cool.

Hello - the graffiti photo's were from the John Lennon Wall in Prague and a wall dedicated to Serge Gainsborough in Paris. Both walls dedicated to these artists and their particular expressions. You can look up the John Lennon wall on-line, it keeps evolving with every passerby. I took them with a small digital - nothing fancy. I enjoy graffiti very much when it's done with thoughtful intent. The only collage I've done is in the 'card' series, I found some playing cards on the street and embedded them onto the canvas > like the Joker.

Hi Luke, nice to meet you too, let me tell you that you have an extraordinary work!

About Me:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Lukegilliam
About My Art:
My work is about pushing the Minimalist aesthetic as far as it will go. I use ideas from Minimalism, mixed media, Cubism, Nagualism, and Jazz to express what is going on in the world around me.

Critics and collectors often place me in the category of 'abstract' which is fine up until a certain point. But in reality my work is fluid. I draw on experiences and memories of chaos and idiosynchratic behaviour to define what is around me as images. Like Jazz my work cannot be defined easily other than my work began in 1994 working on sets of collages inspired by Jazz influenced music. I like to explore elements of poetry in my work and set up dialogues between the canvas and mythological figures to express what I hear in music as static images that exist in a timeless space.

In this way I have set up a belief system that images are not bound to time as are humans but create themselves in a sort of 4th dimensional space where the images themselves can choose to either participate in time, or not.

I also like to create modes in my work where by Minimalist motifs not so different than those of Karlheinz Stockhausen are allowed to forge spaces where the human subconcious can explore a new space not readily available in the third dimension. So my work is effectively a study of the human memory as it pertains to the recursive nature of the human brain - to disengage from a subjective reality and engage in a much more tangible view of the subconcious whilst keeping close to a Minimalist way of thinking.

A strong influence on my work are my colleagues Bruno Tocanne, Louis Sclavis from ECM Records and the veteran Canadian artist Michael Snow all of whom have pushed me to push further in my work.

A Day In The Life At Larkhall

It has been one year since leaving Reuben's house, so many things have changed it's hard to grasp. Although it would be hard to compare anything to life in France in 2006, indeed working with Bruno Tocanne was a life changing experience, living with Reuben was a very special time. There are several things that spring to mind, for instance the fact that he was always coming and going, there was a constant state of excitement. I think the sheer amount of action and people coming over made for a… Continue

Poetry By Luke Gilliam

In a field of attention standing

Communication gliding

Towards Neptune's landing

Energy banding and disbanding

In a field of attention thriving

Like cosmic birds

Colliding and diving

Like a distant sun

Burning away in hiding

In a new dimension clawing

Communication in two directions

Moving to three directions

Moving to four directions

A deeply encased wish

That the moment

Is a glimpse at the fourth… Continue

File 24480

An article by Luke Gilliam dated February 2009

"I was recently asked to write a description for a small series of paintings I have made for the British Art Academy called "4 Day Fast To Stop War"

In general I don't like writing about individual paintings.

So I won't.

What I think is pertinent. Also severely overdue. Is a review as to why there is a war in Iraq. I remember following it very closely in 2003 and 2004 in all of the newspapers in Toronto.… Continue
