About Me:
Joanna Mialkowska : was born in Poland in 1979 in the university town of Wroclaw. She was drawing sketches throughout her youth but channelled that talent into her chosen career Architecture. Ireland in her youthful mind was always was a place of dreams and freedom and two days after graduation from university in Wroclaw she was in Dublin working in a typical Irish bar before getting a job as an Architect. Ireland gave her the sense of personal freedom to explore many issues including love, independence, freedom and art. It was a place where all ideas were welcome in what to her was the spiritual home of revolution & rebellious thoughts. These feelings and new perspectives she shared easily with Irish people and felt great empathy for Ireland and every day life Irish life.

She soon found herself expressing this empathy for all that is good and bad in Irish society in her art, drawing on the experiences she had shared with the people who passed through her life. Her work is strongly representative of the current feelings and views of everyday Irish people and the joy and frustration of a society falling into the depth of economic depression after so many halcyon years of boom.

Her work typically shies away from the comfort zone, challenging the viewer with strong contrasts and challenging subjects filled with strong shapes and a dash of cubism in works leaves the viewer with much to digest. But on careful study this all combines in a strong harmonic fashion to make the viewer draw on their own perspectives and morality. Working in oil the subjects are varied but the underlying theme presents the same challenge as each work indicates a stepping stone in an ever emerging strong and unique style. Upon initial inspection the topics vary from Male forms, recession, Irish rugby, lonely women, corrupt bankers & politicos, the lonely struggle for life in modern times, the power of nature versus man, all themes current in today’s Irish society. These themes are also though the classical subjects of mankind’s eternal struggle with the self and the surrounding universe.
About My Art:
My work is inspired by the current feeling in Ireland and by mindset of Irish citizens. It from the perspective of a strong woman into the nature of male feelings, frustrations and male beauty as an iconic element in Irish society. I generally gravitate towards a strong palette of colours and do not hesitate to reflect the reality- as I see it. Man, recession and rugby- that is what is reflected in my paintings as a viewpoint of current Irish society.

The Serpentine Gallery Presents Richard Hamilton: A One Hit Wonder?

My first visit to the exhibition left me so unimpressed I actually went back for a second view and left equally disappointed. As an eager art history student, I had loved dissecting his seminal 1956 work–from the Pollock-inspired rug on the floor to the hoover laying against the stairwell, overtly taken from a Hoover advert. From [...]

b-loud: Figurative Drawing: Sketching to the Bone: Andreja Repnik

Slovenian art student Andreja Repnik brings a unique vision to the figure. Seethingly torn and ripped limbs are reconstructed with fibre, wood and what could be coral. Her drawings arrest your attention and make you question the mutilation. At only 24 it’s clear what a promising future Andreja has ahead of her. Read on and you’ll [...]
