Profile Information

About Me:
Janet Snell is a graduate, magna-cum-laude, of the Maryland Institute College of Art, where she studied painting with the late Ed Dugmore. She has shown her work in venues such as The Drawing Center in New York City, Strathmore Hall in DC, Asterisk Gallery in Cleveland, and Summit Art Space in her hometown of Akron. Snell is the author of FLYTRAP (Cleveland State University Press Poetry Center) and the e-book HEADS (March Street Press). She has co-authored three other poetry and art collections with her sister Cheryl: MULTIVERSE (MiPO), PRISONER’S DILEMMA (Lopside Press), PANDORA’S BOX and MEMENTO MORI (Scattered Light Publications).
About My Art:
Soon after I graduated from MICA, my work began to involve the depiction of the psychology of the human head and figure. The relationship of mind to body interests me greatly. I use it to deconstruct the world we live in, our fears, our isolation and loneliness, our urge to connect, our collective melancholia. My drawings and paintings also address the man-woman thing, the fragility of family dynamics, societal and psychological violence. These themes are often expressed with metaphors found in dreamscapes, and in the case of my portraits, with color. I use color freely to express the subject’s personality---i.e. yellow for intelligence, violet for moodiness---while the facial features remain realistic. This work is semi-realistic and semi-expressionistic, and thereby connected to my other work.

I think in images. I can get an image in my head while listening to Tom Waits or Jimi Hendrix, for instance, or from reading a favorite author like Genet. I do a thumbnail sketch of the image and think about its metaphysics, the nature of its reality. Solving the problem of finding the right space for the figure is the next step; that’s where process comes in. The touch of the brush leads me, in an intuitive way, to develop the space, which is abstract expressionist. The images themselves mark me as a neo-German expressionist. Image and space are the two elements that focus the relationship between the figurative and the abstract, and provide meaning. Together, they help the viewer experience the complexities of the human subject.
Favorite Music:
Hendrix, Dylan, Waits,Miles Davis, Satie, Ravel
Favorite Artists:
Dugmore and the other expressionists

Rebecca Stevenson-Eyes for Detail

After being astounded by her sculptures in January, we got in contact with Rebecca and met her at her studio. On arrival, we foundered over the strong perfume of these particular bouquets but Rebecca has clearly built her tolerance against resin fumes over the last 10 years. It’s taken her that long to evolve her [...]

b-Loud: Jasmine Ronel: Paint with Passion

Israel-based Jasmine has created a diverse body of work incorporating photography, printing, painting and drawing, using a variety of media. The work has a graphical influence but her techniques and processes give each image a gripping tactility. The subjects are always brewed in a mass of worked textures, layers, tender colour and present emotion. Her [...]

Draw then share with the world: The iPad is a new landscape for artists

The iPad brings portable potential to the artist’s toolbox. Will it plunder the ways we communicate or change how we create and share art? Twitter has proved the efficiency of miniature messaging. Maybe the iPad could jolt a new host of image based chatter. A sketchbook for a few, I doubt it. They’re being pre-ordered in America at [...]
