Here's a list from Slate art guide detailing a lot of galleries with open submissions for 2010. Probably good if you live in Canada! http://www.slateartguide.com/section.php?sec=8&i=8

Hi Marie,
Yes the groups are great for bouncing ideas around. I was just putting feelers out to see if it was normal practise to expect artists to pay exorbiatant fees for the Art Fair. Because if it was I wouldn't bother researching that anymore.
Now I see that it is not I can breathe a sigh of relief as I can press on and look around more. And I can too take no notice of the Vanity gallery emails which are abundant!
Thank you so much for the info. I much appreciate it.
Many thanks
Lorna

Ciao Lorna, just to reaffirm what others have been saying. Art fairs do charge fees which the gallery pays. Effectively, the gallery rents the space to promote the art and artists they represent. What is happening here is that a gallery has had the idea to participate (probably representing artists that they don't formally represent on a regular basis) and are asking the artists to foot the bill. If you are being asked to pay, don't participate, as this is not true gallery representation.

I am assuming this is not your formal gallery representative, just an arrangement for the art fair. This would explain the reason. You may just as well put together a consortium of artists, share the costs and rent the space yourselves (and pay no gallery commissions on sales !).

Personally, I let my galleries decide what art shows and fairs they wish to participate in, as it is their business decision and has no relation to the artists they represent. Equally, we the artists do not pay for shows our galleries participate in, we just pay the agreed commissions. You need formal gallery representation to be at this level, otherwise everything else is just in passing.

Thanks Marie and Carolyn, I think this gallery is pushing the fees on to the artist and therefore under no pressure t do any kind of representation or promotion for us. I have had this feeling form them before and I am certainly not taking them up on their offer, I don't have the money anyhow! I showed with them once and there was little or no promotion, or urgency to do so from them, at that stage I think I started to feel uncomfortable.
I have tried before to have a dialogue about it with the person who works in the gallery, but she is not the decision maker...
I may try again though.
Thank you both for your replies, it is quite difficult to know the lie of the land being such a newbie. Thanks again, much appreciated!

Lorna, I showed at the AAF about 4 years ago with an artist I know who organised it all, therefore paying the very high fees himself AND taking over paintings for the artists from France. None of us paid anything up front - he decided on 30% on sales which I thought was more than reasonable considering the risks. (He got his money back threefold luckily for him) but has since given up on the AAF because the costs for a booth have risen enormously and he hasn't done so well since. Galleries are more often than not getting artists to contribute to the fees now (and often taking a commission too so they are taking zero risks. I would avoid any gallery in that category - that's my opinion for what it's worth....

Hi Marie,
I would be interested on knowing if other galleries are charging a small fortune to represent artists in the Affordable Art Fair. I have been offered a place by a gallery but for a fee that semms a little extraodinary. Do you have any idea if this is normal operation for this fair?

Hello all, I was just wondering is anyone is participating on the London Affordable Art Fair. It would be interesting to know if your representative gallery is charging you any fees. The gallery offering to represent me don't really understand the meaning of 'affordable' ;>
